Past Events  An Evening with Legends

This year’s An Evening With Legends featured illustrious composer David Foster and renowned artist Katharine McPhee as entertainment at the annual iconic event on May 7, 22024 and sponsored by Wells Fargo. Beginning in 2005, An Evening With Legends has become one of the premier invitations in Houston and aims to raise funds for Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center by offering the opportunity to spend the evening hearing from top voices of our time including artists, athletes, and world leaders.

Sue Smith, Shelly and Brian Hendry, and Limor and Stuart Smith served as chairs for this year’s event. Held at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston, guests saw the ballroom transformed into a swanky, chic space courtesy of Blooming Gallery. Dinner consisted of a burrata salad, hibiscus-glazed short rib and a passion fruit cheesecake. 

Debbie Sukin, President of Texas Children’s, served as Master of Ceremonies and highlighted impactful statistics about the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, including its status as the largest cancer center in the United States. Dr. Susan Blaney, Director of the Center, shared insights about the leading transformative, translational and clinical research initiatives underway. 

Foster and McPhee treated the crowd of 700 to the most entertaining program yet. McPhee sang to two tables of generous supporters for a unique auction experience. Cancer patient and aspiring Broadway star Layla Bourghesi sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” accompanied by Foster, and received a standing ovation. Foster was so moved by the cause that he gave a personal contribution during Paddles Up. The night raised $1.25 million for this life-changing work.
