Research Cancer Cytogenetics Core Laboratory
The Cytogenetics Laboratory at Texas Children’s Cancer Center is a CLIA/CAP-certified, COG-accredited laboratory that performs comprehensive clinical testing of both pediatric solid tumors and hematological cancers. The laboratory offers routine chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and soon SNP array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) testing on a variety of specimen types, including solid tumors, peripheral blood, bone marrow, and body fluids.

Cytogenetic Minimum Specimen Requirements
Transport at room temperature or store at 2~8 C overnight (if necessary). Sample test requisition form or routing slip must accompany sample.
- Bone Marrow or Peripheral Blood. 3.0 cc in Sodium Heparin (green-top) vacutainer
- Solid Tumor / Lymph Node / other Non-neoplastic Solid Tissues. ~5mm cubed fresh tissue biopsy transported in a sealed sterile container with cytogenetic transport media (provided through the Histology lab).
Body Fluids. 5~10 mL in sterile container.
Prior to obtaining a sample or when a sample is ready, please call the cytogenetic laboratory at 832-824-4457 or page the technologist on-call pager at 713-605-8989 x2569 to arrange for transport. All bone marrow samples are routed through the Pathology Central Receiving Area, located in B.101. Peripheral blood specimens may be transported to P-tube 511 (please call the lab when sending).
