The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) is a 12-bed inpatient unit located within the main campus of Texas Children’s Hospital. The IRU provides medical and rehabilitation nursing services 24 hours a day, seven days a week with therapy services Monday through Saturday. Diagnostic services including radiology, pharmacy, and laboratory are provided on-site. See “Services” tab for a full description. Our program collaborates with insurance companies, state-funded Medicaid programs, and self-pay arrangements. Our services provide comprehensive care and address the physical, cognitive, psychological, developmental, and educational needs of patients and their families.
The goals of our program are to:
Maximize functional independence of our pediatric patients
Improve our patients’ comfort and psychological well-being
Provide strategies to successfully navigate a return to the patient’s home, school, and community
Educate and empower our patients and their families

The Texas Children's Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) has been recognized and awarded a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for providing comprehensive integrated inpatient pediatric rehabilitation. The IRU at Texas Children’s is the only pediatric CARF-accredited program in the state of Texas. Our interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation team includes experts in pediatric rehabilitation who strive to provide the most up to date, progressive, and evidence-based rehabilitative services to their patients and families.
