Patient Resources

Texas Children’s Heart Center is proud to offer electrocardiogram (EKG) heart screening to student-athletes as part of their pre-participation athletic physical exam. An EKG is a safe, painless test that lasts about 10 minutes. While an EKG cannot guarantee safety from sudden cardiac arrest and can produce false positives, the latest research suggests that an EKG may help detect if an athlete is at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

We offer EKG at several locations throughout the Greater Houston area, making it easy and convenient for your student-athlete to start their competitive season with greater peace of mind. Student-athletes should have their doctor send an EKG order to Texas Children’s or bring a copy of the order when they walk in. Texas Children’s also provides Cardiac Sports Clearance Clinics for student-athletes at our community locations.
