At Texas Children’s Heart Center, our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) cares for children in need of specialized care for their cardiac condition.

Each year, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) admits approximately 800 children with heart disease, the majority of whom have undergone heart surgery. Texas Children’s Hospital also has a very active Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Program, and the CICU team cares for many children each year who require mechanical cardiac support and undergo heart transplantation.

The best in care for your child

Our care team uses their extensive knowledge to optimize the best possible outcomes for the children they treat. Our team of cardiac intensivists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses and respiratory therapists work in concert with your family to care for your child.

Our state-of-the-art facilities coupled with dynamic decision making in the CICU allow our team to carefully analyze your child's case and deliver specialized care. Additionally, we are a recognized leader in training physicians who have dedicated their careers to the care of children with critical cardiac disease. We educate physicians already trained in critical care, cardiology, anesthesia, neonatology, and cardiac surgery on the specific aspects of caring for a patient population with complex needs and interventions.
