Meet our physicians: Dr. Susan Raine

At Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, we care for women and children from preconception, to long after the birth of the child. We are dedicated to obstetrics, gynecology and fetal intervention because we know to improve the health of children, we must start with mothers. To help you get to know our physicians better, we decided to sit down with them and do a short Q&A.

What is your role at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women?

I am an obstetrician and gynecologist. I see patients at both our medical center and Pearland locations.

How long have you worked for Texas Children's Pavilion for Women?

I have worked at the Pavilion for Women since we opened our outpatient clinic in 2011.

Favorites – Movie? TV show? Music? Food? Sport? Holiday?

As the youngest girl with three older brothers, I was raised on the baseball diamond. As early as I can remember, I watched my big brothers play little league. I finally got my first uniform when I was 4 years old. My tee ball team was called The Kittens, and our jerseys were an obnoxious bright orange. As I got older, I was fortunate that my father had season tickets to the Texas Ranger’s games. My summers were filled with days and nights at the ballpark. I support the Astros and am always happy when they win, but the Rangers are “my” team.

What are your hobbies?

I love to scuba dive. I first learned to dive when I was 12 years old when family friends took me to Cozumel, Mexico. I will never forget my first night dive. I was scared to death—it was so dark! I obviously wasn’t an experience diver, so I started drifting away with the current. The dive master grabbed me and pulled me back toward the group, and I am sure I looked a little confused. He turned me around and pointed his flashlight at the giant coral reef behind me. It was a little overwhelming to have a massive rock wall behind me. But what was really scary was to see it full of sea urchins. I almost ruined the rest of my vacation with sea urchin stings!

Do you have a hidden talent?

I don’t know if it’s a talent, but I have been playing saxophone since I was 10 years old. All the fifth graders who said they wanted to play saxophone were sitting in a row. The music teacher started on one end and asked each child if we wanted to play alto or tenor sax. The first 15 kids said, “alto.” I was the second to last in the row, and of course I said, “tenor.” Mostly it was just to be different. I had no idea what the difference between them was. A week later, I found out. Mine was twice as big! You should have seen me trying to drag that huge case home every day.
