The Office of Student Affiliations at Texas Children’s Hospital is responsible for managing all nursing student placements and most physician assistant (PA)* student placements. All nursing and PA student placements must receive approval and clearance from the Office of Student Affiliations regardless of Texas Children’s employment status.
Non-nursing/PA students must receive approval and clearance from their respective departments.
Physician Assistant Students
All Physician Assistant (PA) students, except Baylor College of Medicine PA students require approval and clearance from the Office of Student Affiliations. *If you are a Baylor College of Medicine PA student, please contact the BCM Program director at https://www.bcm.edu/people-search/elizabeth-elliott-21031.
All other PA students requesting placements, practicum hours or permission to complete a student project at Texas Children’s Hospital need to complete the following steps:
At least 6 months prior to the student’s desired start, the student must contact the Office of Student Affiliations at studentaffiliations@texaschildrens.org to ensure that an affiliation agreement exists between the school and hospital. An affiliation agreement must be fully executed before the student can begin the process for approval.
If an affiliation agreement is not in place, the student or school representative may request for an agreement initiation; however, there is no guarantee that the request will be granted.
Once, it is determined that an affiliation agreement is fully executed, the student and/or school coordinator will then be responsible for securing a preceptor and/or project mentor.
90 days prior to the desired start date, the student must submit a Request for Student Placement. The Request for Student Placement form can be found here. (Note: Due to the volume of requests, requests for student placements are often in queue for 30 to 45 days before moved into processing).
Submission of a Request for Student Placement does not guarantee acceptance/placement.
A separate Request for Student Placement must be submitted for each rotation/class.
Once the request is reviewed and accepted by the Office of Student Affiliations, the request is moved into processing at which point it is assigned a request number. The student is emailed a list of required documents that must be completed and returned to the Office of Student Affiliations.
Please note that if the student chooses a preceptor employed by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), additional approval from BCM will be needed that can take up to 6 weeks. The forms needed form BCM approval will be provided to the student from the Office of Student Affiliations only after the request has been reviewed and accepted.
Once the Office of Student Affiliations has received and reviewed all required documentation, the student will be sent clearance to begin their rotation/practicum and/or project. The student may not begin until final clearance is received.
