Personal Statement
My primary interest is in type 2 diabetes in children. I am the Medical Director and the Principle Investigator for the Baylor site of TODAY (Treatment Options in Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth). TODAY is an NIH-sponsored, multicenter trial that will determine which of three treatment options (metformin alone, metformin plus intensive lifestyle changes, and metformin plus rosiglitazone) best maintains glycemic control in children with type 2 diabetes. In other research endeavors, I am investigating the ethnic differences in co-morbidities in children with type 2 diabetes and the effect of exercise on fuel utilization children with type 2 diabetes. I am also a Co-Investigator on a study to see whether teaching parents problem-solving strategies can improve glycemic control in a child with type 1 diabetes.
