Get to know Renan A. Orellana, MD
Dr. Orellana has focused his research on the influence of development on the molecular mechanisms that regulate muscle protein metabolism during critical illness, aiming to develop nutritional support therapies for children in intensive care. By using the neonatal pig as a model for the human neonate, he has examined the impairment on the regulatory role of insulin and amino acids behind muscle wasting induced by mechanical ventilation and sepsis. The long-term goal of his research is to contribute fundamental new knowledge to design nutritional therapies during critical illness, using targeted nutritional and pharmacological strategies to support pediatric patients in different age groups.
