Get to know Parth S. Mehta, MD
Dr. Parth Mehta is the Director of the Global Oncology Program. Before relocating back to the United States, Dr. Mehta lived in Africa from 2007 to 2011. Dr. Mehta served as the Director of the Haemophilia and Oncology Clinic of Botswana at the Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana.
He is a faculty member at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center in Houston and provides clinical care to patients at Texas Children's Hospital West Campus. His clinical special interests include neuroblastoma, disorders of coagulation, international oncology, and HIV-related hematological and oncological problems.
In 2007, Dr. Mehta started the Botswana Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Program as a Global Health Corps doctor, while also serving as a consultant for HIV-infected children at several centers in Africa, throughout the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) network. Given the lack of trained professionals in pediatric hematology/oncology in sub-Saharan Africa, he and other faculty at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center created a training workshop for capacity building. In 2011, he returned to Houston and became Director of the Global Oncology Program.
Dr. Mehta has led the development of a Global Consult System to provide pediatric hematology/oncology consults to the BIPAI Network serving over 300,000 children with HIV infection. He has been involved in detailed assessments of the healthcare systems of Botswana, Malawi, and Uganda in preparation for the development and continuation of our pediatric oncology projects in these countries.
Dr. Mehta graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Simon’s Rock College. He completed medical school and pediatrics residency at SUNY Stony Brook and pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at Texas Children’s Cancer Center/Baylor College of Medicine.
He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.
