Get to know Nino C. Rainusso, MD
Dr. Nino Rainusso, is Director of the Solid Tumor Programs and Co-Director of the multidisciplinary Cardio-Oncology Program at Texas Children’s Hospital. He is an associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. He is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist specializing in the care of children with bone tumors, sarcomas and thyroid cancers.
Dr. Rainusso obtained his M.D. degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. He completed his residency in pediatrics at University of Illinois at Chicago and a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology as part of the combined Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital program. In addition to his three years of pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training, he also completed an additional year of specialized fellowship training focused specifically on pediatric sarcomas. He has been a faculty member at Baylor College of Medicine and member of the medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital since 2010.
Dr. Rainusso has been instrumental in the development of the Bone Tumor Program and the multidisciplinary musculoskeletal tumor clinic. He is involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with sarcomas at Texas Children’s Hospital, and periodically provides his expertise in a virtual tumor board for patients with recurrent osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma nationwide.
The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the cardiovascular complications associated with cancer treatment in children and adolescents is also Dr. Rainusso’s clinical focus.
In the laboratory, Dr. Rainusso is interested in developing patient-derived tumor xenograft from pediatric patients with sarcomas and rare tumors. The goal is to develop a pre-clinical model that could accurately predict the success of novel therapeutic approaches in pediatric cancers.
Dr. Rainusso has published multiple scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and written book chapters. He has been invited to speak about pediatric sarcomas, thyroid cancers and cardio-oncology in national and international conferences, and has participated as scientific reviewer in different cancer research panels.

His clinical interests include: osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma.
