Marianna M. Sockrider, MD, DrPH

Dr. Sockrider has special interest in chronic lung diseases and helping families be expert disease managers. She works with many families including those whose children have cystic fibrosis and asthma. She believes in effective communication and disease monitoring within the family and in collaboration with health care providers. She also has special interest in pulmonary complications related to Rett and MECP2 syndrome. She has a doctorate in health promotion and disease prevention and has spent 30 years designing and evaluating patient and family educational materials and programs. She promotes preventive lung health initiatives such as good indoor and outdoor quality, secondhand tobacco smoke avoidance and tobacco smoking prevention and cessation. She also collaborates nationally with the American Thoracic Society and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to provide public and patient/family education. She is the project leader for the CF Family Education Program for cystic fibrosis self-management that is used nationally. She is also a passionate medical educator and has received a number of teaching awards. She has been involved in quality improvement activities, development of clinical practice guidelines, and both learner and continuing education.

Dr. Sockrider is involved in clinical research primarily related to pediatric asthma. She serves as the lead pediatric investigator for the Baylor American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Network (ALA-ACRC) site. The ALA-ACRC has conducted a number of asthma studies including both adults and children including exploring the role of novel therapies (such as use of a soy supplement), comparing different step down controller strategies for patients in good control, and the impact of treatment of nasal and sinus disease in asthma control. Dr. Sockrider is also a Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C).
