Personal Statement
Karol Musher evaluates children and adolescents who have oral and written language disorders, including dyslexia and dysgraphia. She does diagnostic testing and relies heavily on qualitative as well as quantitative results to draw conclusions. Based on her results, she refers to a network of language and learning specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, occupational therapists, and schools for intervention. She works with parents to help them understand the learning profiles of their children and their critical role in the intervention process. Over her 48 years at TCH, she has interacted with many private and public schools in and around Houston. She meets with these schools’ learning specialists and teachers to coordinate her patients’ therapy programs. She continues to provide educational guidance to many of her patients through high school and college, and they are now bringing their children to her for evaluations.
As part of her goal to educate others in the field, Mrs. Musher has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Houston Department of Communication Disorders where she taught the course on written language learning disorders, and she frequently lectures to parents, teachers and professional organizations in and around Houston. At Baylor College of Medicine, she lectures to medical students on speech-language development and has yearly seminars with child psychiatry fellows to focus on how the two fields can best collaborate. Prior to joining TCH in 1971, Mrs. Musher was a speech-language pathologist at Boston Children’s Hospital for 4 years.
