Dr. Julie Hakim is a Canadian and U.S. board-certified OBGYN and Assistant Professor in OBGYN at Baylor College of Medicine and Pediatric Gynecology at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She completed her OBGYN residency at the University of Ottawa in 2014, her fellowship in Pediatric Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in 2016, and earned a master’s degree in Translational Research from the Clinical Scientist Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine in 2019. She is mid-point in a second fellowship on Obesity Management through the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
Currently, she works in the division of Pediatric Gynecology at Texas Children’s Hospital, which focuses on reproductive and gynecologic health needs of pediatric and adolescent girls in Houston, surrounding cities in Texas and adjacent states. Her clinical work has given her a comprehensive knowledge of pediatric and adult gynecology.
Dr. Hakim holds multiple NIH-funded awards, founded an active area of research in vaginal tissue regeneration and biotechnology, and leads at Lab in Vaginal Tissue Repair and Regeneration at Texas Children’s Hospital. She also holds multiple provisional patents and is the co-inventor on a patent for a novel vaginal stent designed specifically to address the needs of pediatric and adolescent girls. She has raised 1.8M towards this endeavor and is currently in the process of designing and leading a clinical trial to test this vaginal stent to help vaginas heal following surgery and radiation treatments. Her work in this endeavor highlights her ability to secure external funding and institutional resources, collaborate with medical device companies, work with the NIH’s Small Business Innovation Research program, and navigate the FDA approval process.
FemTech, and the intersection of medicine, technology, and innovation to advance women’s health have always been passions of Dr. Hakim’s, and her love of these arenas lead naturally to the co-founding of FemTech Focus, a not-for-profit geared towards empowering the women’s health and wellness industry. Dr. Hakim is equally passionate about health promotion and service-orientation which she honed from her time as Founder and Director of the Tumaini Children's Project, which is a nonprofit organization focused on supporting Kenyan children affected by HIV/AIDS.
