Running/Lower Extremity Injury

Running analysis is a specialized form of motion analysis used by physical therapists and sports medicine physicians to identify impairments related to running mechanics, strength or flexibility. Typical patients are middle school and high school athletes who engage in running as their primary sport (track or cross-country) or participate in running as part of their sport training or for recreation. The running analysis is used to develop treatment plans to address impairments in function or technique with the goal of safe return to sport and activity.

A running evaluation includes a full biomechanical running gait analysis, as well as tests for strength, flexibility and joint range of motion, as needed, to determine the cause(s) of injury or movement impairments.

After interpretation and analysis, the athlete will receive recommendations and a customized plan for addressing a current injury or reducing risk of future injury or re-injury. Also, the athlete, their parents, coaches and care team will gain a better understanding of their personal biomechanical tendencies that could result in future injury so that appropriate monitoring and countermeasures can be put in place.

Return-to-Sport Evaluations

Following an injury or surgery, we can evaluate an athlete’s ability to return to sport or perform a sports-specific task using high-speed cameras and force plates. Other tests may assess balance, running symmetry, strength and more. Movements are analyzed for tendencies that could put the athlete at risk of incurring the same injury. A personalized rehabilitation program or return-to-sport plan can be developed to guide the athlete from injury back to full sports participation.
