Texas Children's Hospital Neuroscientist Dr. Huda Zoghbi Receives 2011 Legacy Award from The Brookwood Community

News

Dr. Huda Y. Zoghbi, Director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital and an internationally renowned neurogeneticist, was honored today with the Vita and Lee Lyman Dewey Tuttle Brookwood Legacy Award for Excellence and Partnership in Medicine. Dr. Zoghbi received the award in recognition of her leadership in neurological research and its importance to the understanding and care of adults with functional disabilities.

The award celebrates the vision and contributions of the Tuttles as life-long champions for research addressing neurological diseases afflicting children and their support of The Brookwood Community, which serves adults with disabilities to complete the "circle of care" initiated by research.

The Brookwood Community is a nonprofit organization that provides a God-centered educational, residential, and entrepreneurial community for adults with functional disabilities. It is located in Brookshire, Texas, just west of Houston.

Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children's Hospital, said that there are many parallels and similarities between Brookwood and Texas Children's.

"Many of our young patients mature and become citizens at Brookwood, and many of the same people who are passionate about the ministry of Brookwood are involved and passionate about Texas Children's and its patients," said Wallace. "Dr. Zoghbi and her team of researchers at the NRI help improve lives for children with complex and really challenging neurological disorders, which ultimately will help improve the lives of the citizens at The Brookwood Community."

The award was presented at The Brookwood Community's biennial event, An Evening in the Garden 2011 Gala. This year's event was co-chaired by Celina Hellmund, Cynthia Petrello and Melinda Stubbs, who nominated Dr. Zoghbi for the award.
