Texas Children's Hospital announces new chief of the division of pediatric surgery

HOUSTON - (Oct.1, 2012) - Renowned pediatricsurgeon Dr. Jed Nuchtern has been appointed as chief of the division ofpediatric surgery at Texas Children's Hospital. Nuchtern, whose appointment waseffective Sept 18, will continue his roles as pediatric surgeon with TexasChildren's Cancer Center and as professor of surgery and pediatrics at BaylorCollege of Medicine. An eminent leaderin the field of pediatric surgery for nearly 20 years, Nuchtern hasdistinguished himself in a variety of research, clinical and academic roles. Hisresearch program includes translational and clinical research ondeveloping new treatments for pediatric solid tumors, particularly neuroblastoma. His primary researchis directed toward identifying the pathways through which molecules affectneuroblastoma tumor progression, which has led him to author more than 80 bookchapters and publications in various academic and medical journals. He is arecipient of numerous honors and awards including the American College ofSurgeons Faculty Research Fellowship. He has been named one of America's TopDoctors by Castle Connolly and Best Doctors in America by Best Doctors, Inc listsfor five consecutive years. Most recently U.S.News World Reportrecognized him as a Top Doctor in 2011.

Board-certifiedin pediatric surgery and surgical critical care, Nuchtern received hisundergraduate degree from Princeton University, a master's degree in chemistryfrom Harvard University and earned his medical degree from Harvard MedicalSchool. After completing his general surgery residency program at University ofWashington, he pursued a research fellowship at National Institutes of Healthin Maryland.

Nuchtern is afellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics-Surgical Section, the AmericanCollege of Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgery and a member ofthe American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons and the InternationalSociety for Pediatric Surgical Oncology. He currently serves as vice chairmanfor the Surgical Discipline Committee and the Neuroblastoma Disease Committee forthe Children's Oncology Group.
