Nurses Honored for Transforming Pediatric Oncology Education

Health Briefs

Two nurse educators from Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center have been recognized hospital-wide for their outstanding contributions to nursing education during the 2025 Nursing Professional Development Week.

Ashley Makara, BSN, RN, CPN, CPHON, was named Educator of the Year for her transformative work in nurse training. Makara led a major redesign of the hospital’s orientation process, introduced hands-on simulation programs for both day and night shifts, and developed personalized learning tools that foster team connection. Her initiatives, including “Teaching Tuesdays” and individualized recognition efforts, have helped create a culture of purposeful learning and professional growth.

Leah Garza, BSN, RN, CPHON, CPN, received the New Educator Rising Star award. With over two decades of bedside experience and just over a year in her educator role, Garza has quickly become a trusted mentor in the inpatient hematology-oncology units. She played a key role in revamping onboarding and competency structures and co-led simulation training for deteriorating patients, bringing clarity and clinical depth to her team.

These honors highlight the critical role nurse educators play in shaping high-quality care for children with cancer and blood disorders. Makara and Garza’s leadership continues to inspire excellence and confidence across the nursing community.
