Personal Statement
Dr Anderson graduated from medical school at The University of Manchester in The United Kingdom. Dr Anderson initially intended to become an ophthalmologist, but after working both as a clinician and as a Lecturer in Anatomy in Manchester and Liverpool, he moved to The Cardiothoracic Institute at The University of London. Initially he was a British Heart Foundation Senior Research Fellow but ultimately became Honorary Consultant at The Royal Brompton Hospital London, The Joseph P Levy Professor of Paediatric Cardiac Morphology, supported by The British Heart Foundation and The Sub-Dean for Cardiology at The National Heart and Lung Institute in London. In 1999 Dr Anderson moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital and to The Institute of Child Health.
Dr Anderson has held several other academic positions, including Professorial Fellow at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Emeritus Professor, University of Manchester, Visiting Professor, Medical University of South Carolina, Visiting Professor at The University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Cardiology, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Dr Anderson has delivered many keynote lectures including The Edgar Mannheimer Memorial Lecture of The European Association of Paediatric Cardiologists, The Waterston Lecture at Cardiology in The Young and A Landmark Lecture at The World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. He has contributed to more than 700 peer-reviewed papers, has edited or co-edited more than 40 books and written more than 260 book chapters.
Academically Dr Anderson is particularly proud of his contributions to the understanding of the anatomy of the atrioventricular septal defect and to the understanding of the anatomy of the conduction tissues. He cherishes the mentorship provided to him by Dr Francis Fontan, Dr John Kirklin and Dr Dwight McGoon and his early collaborations with Dr Elliot Shinebourne, Dr Fergus Macartney, Dr Michael Tynan, Dr Anton Becker, Dr Robert Freedom and Dr James Wilkinson.
Dr Anderson is a skillful golfer and indeed his name was entered in The Guinness Book of Records for his achievements in golf. He is a discerning oenophile and holds an excellent wine collection at his home in London. He is an enthusiastic pianist and has entertained many at his performances at conferences throughout the world.
Dr Anderson is married to Christine who has worked tirelessly by his side for many years and who in her own right has become an expert in cardiac anatomy. Christine is also an excellent golfer and has been a welcoming hostess to most of the ‘dignitaries’ in our specialty at Bob and Christine’s home in London. They are parents to a daughter and a son.
