Frequently Asked Questions
During your first visit, you will meet with a hematologist and either an adolescent gynecologist or an adolescent medicine provider. Together, our team will work with you and your family to develop an individualized care plan that includes:
- Reviewing your menstrual history and symptoms of heavy menstrual bleeding
- Performing lab work to assess for an iron deficiency and possible bleeding disorders that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding
- Discussing treatment options for iron deficiency, which may include oral iron or iron given through an IV
- Reviewing medications that can help manage heavy menstrual bleeding
The number of visits depends on your diagnosis and how you respond to the treatments. If no bleeding disorder is found and the iron deficiency is effectively treated, ongoing hematology visits may not be needed beyond a few appointments. Continued follow up with Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology or Adolescent Medicine may still be helpful to manage menstrual symptoms.
Yes! A detailed conversation with your Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology or Adolescent Medicine provider can help guide you through the available medication options and determine which may be the best fit for you.
