 Psychosocial Programs

The Psychosocial Program aims to provide psychological and emotional support for the challenges that families face when a child is diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder.

The diagnosis and treatment of a childhood cancer or blood disorder presents extraordinary psychological, emotional and social challenges to the entire family. Texas Children's Cancer Center offers a variety of services to help families adapt and mobilize resources in the battle against these diseases. At the heart of these services is the personal commitment of every multidisciplinary team member to understand each young patient as a unique individual. Team members also collaborate with parents at each step in the process to be attentive to the quality of life of all family members, including siblings.

Program Support

The Psychosocial Programs at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center are generously supported by The Periwinkle Foundation and numerous charity foundations. 

Much of the assistance provided by our Psychosocial Program is rarely covered by insurance or other third-party payors, yet these services are an integral part of the care that patients need to receive to best support their wellness when going through the challenges of treatment.

The Periwinkle Foundation has been supporting the emotional needs of our patients and families since 1983 and now underwrites most of the cost associated with four programs that are extremely meaningful to our patients and families—Camp Periwinkle, Camp YOLO, Making a Mark®, and the Celebration of Life. The Periwinkle Foundation has helped provide psychosocial support to more than 3,500 Cancer Center patients and siblings. The services provided by The Periwinkle Foundation are invaluable, since the Psychosocial Programs offered at Texas Children’s Cancer Center are rarely covered by insurance or third-party payors.
