The Dr. Kelly DeScioli Global Child Health Pediatrics Residency Program at Baylor College of Medicine offers a unique 3+1 pathway combining three years of categorical pediatrics training in Houston with a dedicated year of global health clinical immersion in Africa or Latin America. Fully accredited and embedded within the Texas Children’s Global Health Network, the program prepares residents for ethical, leadership-focused careers in global child health.
Global Health provides short-term learning experiences for external Pediatrics residents enrolled in accredited Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) programs. Typically, opportunities are available for two learners per month at each site in Botswana, Lesotho, and Malawi. Learners are financially responsible for their own airfare, ground transport, meals and incidental expenses.
The Baylor College of Medicine Global Women’s Health Residency Track trains future academic leaders in women’s health through integrated clinical care, research, and mentorship. Launched in 2019, the track offers selected Ob/Gyn residents immersive global health experience in Malawi while completing a standard four-year residency, with dedicated faculty guidance and research engagement.
The BCM Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery offers the first and only NRMP-recognized Global Surgery training program in the nation. The program incorporates a rigorous two-year global curriculum that integrates broad-based surgical training, international experience, and academic leadership, preparing residents to deliver essential surgical care and lead local, national, and global surgery initiatives.
The Baylor College of Medicine Global Women’s Health Fellowship was established to provide high quality patient care to women world-wide along with paradigm changing research programs and superior educational opportunities for health care providers in low resource settings. Our two-year fellowship focuses on conditions such as maternal mortality, obstetric fistula, preterm birth, neglected tropical diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, malnutrition and others that impact the health and well-being of women worldwide. Fellows will spend about 80 percent of their time living and working in Malawi with supervision by Baylor College of Medicine faculty and other experts in global women’s health.
The BCM Pediatric Emergency Medicine Global Health Fellowship integrates rigorous PEM training with focused global health education. Established in 2005, it prepares fellows for academic careers addressing child health disparities through sustainable emergency care, education, research, and systems strengthening at local, national, and global levels.
Each summer, with funding from Chevron’s Corporate Responsibility Initiative, Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Children’s Global Health Network offer a graduate-level internship in Houston, Texas. This 12-week internship introduces participants to the administration and operational management of Texas Children’s Global Health Network programs while providing exposure to key issues in global health management and program implementation.
The INSIGHT consortia is one of many consortia that comprise the Fogarty Launching Future Leaders in Global Health Research Training Program. The purpose of the Fogarty programs is to provide mentored global health research training opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for pre- and postdoctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. Trainee research projects are supported by experienced, dedicated mentors with expertise in clinical, public health, laboratory, and implementation research.
