Dr. Candelaria O'Farrell Wins Award for Presentation on Her ITP Research
Dr. Candelaria O'Farrell has won the "Research Blitz Best Presentation" award at this year's Pediatric Research Symposium at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. Her groundbreaking research on "Predicting Treatment Response to Emergent Therapies in Pediatric Immune Thrombocytopenia" was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Amanda Grimes at Texas Children’s Cancer & Hematology Center.
Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets, which are essential for blood clotting. This can lead to easy bruising, excessive bleeding, and the appearance of tiny red or purple spots on the skin called petechiae. In severe cases, it can cause significant bleeding that requires immediate medical attention.
By focusing on predicting treatment response, Dr. O'Farrell's research is helping to identify which patients will benefit most from specific therapies, paving the way for improved outcomes and treatment plans that are better tailored to individuals.
Dr. O'Farrell's research was one of seven selected from over 145 submissions for the special "Research Blitz" segment. The audience voted her presentation as the best.
Congratulations Dr. O’Farrell!
