Motion Analysis and Human Performance Laboratory

Motion Analysis and Human Performance Laboratory

Texas Children’s Motion Analysis and Human Performance Laboratory is one of the only pediatric motion and performance analysis labs in Texas and one of approximately 20 labs that have earned Commission for Motion Laboratory Accreditation nationally and internationally.

We are part of Texas Children’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center, which is nationally recognized for excellence in treating conditions from minor fractures and sports injuries to complex disorders and congenital conditions.

Our lab brings together a multidisciplinary team of physicians, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, biomechanists, and other specialists who work together to better understand how children, adolescents, and young adults move.

We use advanced technology to measure movement and mobility in patients with a wide range of needs, from complex neurologic and orthopedic conditions to sports injury and performance concerns. Our tools include 3D motion capture, force platforms, an instrumented treadmill, electromyography, and metabolic testing equipment.

What makes this work meaningful is not just the technology, but the expertise behind it. Our team translates complex movement data into clinically useful information that helps guide diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and return-to-activity decisions.

Motion analysis allows us to see important details that are not visible to the naked eye. By measuring movement patterns, muscle activity, and force production during tasks such as walking, running, jumping, and sport-specific movements, we can better understand how underlying impairments affect function, quality of life, and athletic performance.

What we do

Our lab provides Clinical Gait Analysis to better understand how your child walks and moves. This in-depth evaluation helps our care teams identify the factors affecting mobility and supports treatment planning, including pre-surgical decision-making for patients with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, brain and spinal cord injuries, and other neuromuscular disorders.

Our Human Performance team works with pediatric and adolescent athletes of all levels to assess movement, guide rehabilitation, and support recovery from sports-related injuries. Areas of focus include running and lower extremity conditions, pitching mechanics, ACL rehabilitation, and concussion.
