The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) is a 16-bed inpatient unit located within Texas Children’s Hospital Medical Center Campus

The IRU provides medical and rehabilitation nursing 24 hours a day, with therapy services seven days a week. Diagnostic services, including radiology, pharmacy and laboratory, are provided on-site. Our program collaborates with insurance companies, state-funded Medicaid programs and self-pay arrangements. Our services provide comprehensive care and address the physical, cognitive, psychological, developmental and educational needs of patients and their families. The goals of our program are to:

  • Maximize functional independence of our pediatric patients
  • Improve our patients’ comfort and psychological well-being
  • Provide strategies to successfully navigate a return to the patient’s home, school, and community
  • Educate and empower our patients and their families

CARF Accreditation

The Texas Children's Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) has been recognized and awarded a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for providing comprehensive integrated inpatient pediatric rehabilitation. The IRU at Texas Children’s is the only pediatric CARF-accredited program in the state of Texas. Our interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation team includes experts in pediatric rehabilitation who strive to provide the most up to date, progressive, and evidence-based rehabilitative services to their patients and families.
