Cochlear Implant Program

The Cochlear Implant Program at Texas Children’s Hospital is one of the most experienced pediatric cochlear implant centers in the region. Through our comprehensive, specialized care and the use of advanced hearing technology, we help children with significant hearing loss achieve the best possible communication outcomes and an improved quality of life. Our program has grown since 2001 to perform more than 130 cochlear implant procedures each year.

What is a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear implants are sophisticated medical devices designed to bypass damaged structures of the inner ear and directly stimulate the hearing nerve. For children with severe to profound hearing loss, a cochlear implant can significantly improve access to sound and support the development of speech and language skills.

Evaluation Process

The decision to recommend a cochlear implant is highly individualized. Each child undergoes a thorough evaluation by our multidisciplinary Cochlear Implant Team, which includes specialists in:

  • Otolaryngology (ENT)
  • Audiology
  • Speech-Language Pathology (Audio-Verbal Based Therapy)
  • Social Work
  • And other pediatric specialists as needed

After all evaluations are completed, our team will provide formal recommendations regarding cochlear implantation. Families are supported in understanding these recommendations and can decide how they wish to move forward with their child’s care. We are committed to partnering with patients and families from the initial consultation through long-term follow-up, ensuring every child receives the support needed on their hearing journey!
