Debraeyia’s Path to Starting a Family
Debraeyia’s journey to motherhood was anything but easy. For nearly two decades, she faced a rollercoaster of infertility treatments, surgeries, and heartbreaking losses with her husband, Brian, by her side. Well-meaning doctors were suggesting adoption, informing her she had less than a 1% chance of having children, even with IVF. But Debraeyia refused to give up.
Her determination led her to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, where a team of compassionate specialists worked tirelessly to help her achieve her dream of becoming a mom. Their solution: a transabdominal cerclage — sealing her cervix with a rubber band-like device — to strengthen her chances of carrying a pregnancy to term. With Texas Children’s supporting her, Debraeyia tried IVF one last time and implanted three viable embryos. Hoping to finally have a child of her own — half Debraeyia, half Brian, and a whole family at last.
When all three embryos successfully took, she was elated. Debraeyia knew — even with a difficult pregnancy ahead of her — that she and all three of her boys would stand a fighting chance thanks to Texas Children’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine experts.
I said, ‘As long as they fight, I'll fight.’ And so I did.
Carrying triplets at 35 was no small feat. Debraeyia’s high-risk pregnancy meant she required constant monitoring, and severe nausea made it difficult to eat or sleep. But her team at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women was there for her every step of the way.
“They made sure I ate when I couldn’t eat,” Debraeyia said. “They followed me closely and held my hand the entire time I was pregnant.”
At 32 weeks and 5 days, Debraeyia delivered Elijah, Josiah, and Zekeriyah via C-section. Despite developing postpartum preeclampsia with dangerously high blood pressure, she describes her birth experience as “luxurious.”
“They took care of me, and they took even better care of my kids,” she said.
Texas Children’s didn’t just help me have my boys — they gave me the family I dreamed of for nearly two decades.
The triplets spent their earliest days in Texas Children’s Level IV NICU, each in their own room, which allowed Debraeyia and Brian to stay close by. Even if their boys couldn’t come home quite yet.
And Bella Luna Boutique and Spa was there to support Debraeyia as she navigated the challenges of pumping and breastfeeding three infants on a high-calorie formula diet.
Now, more than a decade later, Debraeyia reflects on her journey to motherhood with gratitude.
“Texas Children’s didn’t just help me have my boys — they gave me a family,” she said. “They’re a partner in raising my children.”
For Debraeyia and Brian, Elijah, Josiah, and Zekeriyah are more than a miracle — they’re the family’s biggest blessing.
Thank you, Texas Children’s!
