For Patients and Their Families


Optimal access to our services is one of our central focuses with patient care activities and an integral part of your experience at Texas Children's. If it is your first time visiting with us, or you are returning for a follow up visit, we will provide you with the utmost family-centered care delivered by exceptional clinical staff and physicians.

Appointments


To schedule an appointment with one of our gastroenterologists, please make sure your pediatrician has completed our New Patient Referral Form. Once we have received your child’s referral, it will be reviewed and we will contact you directly to schedule your appointment.

To schedule a return appointment or to reschedule your appointment with one of our gastroenterologists, please call 832-822-2778 or 800-364-2778, and someone will be available to assist you in scheduling this appointment.

Appointments for patients from outside the U.S. are made through Texas Children’s International Services. International Services will connect the referring provider with one of the physicians in Texas Children's Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Service. Next, the family will be asked to call International Services at 832-824-1138 or 1-888-240-8244 to make an appointment.

Your Visit


Please arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment to accommodate time for parking and registration. If you are late to your scheduled appointment time, your appointment may have to be rescheduled.

If it is your child's first appointment, bring as many of the following items as possible to the appointment, if available:

  • Medical records (including labs) of the patient
  • Any x-rays and/or scans that have been obtained (preferably on a CD if available)
  • Proof of insurance

The initial GI evaluation may take one or two visits to the GI Clinic. During your child's first visit, a doctor or nurse practitioner will ask you and your child questions and your child will have a physical exam. X-rays, blood tests or other tests may be also be done during this visit, and the results will be sent to your child's other doctors. Additionally, a dietitian or other members of the GI team may see your child. Regular follow-up visits may be needed to see how your child is doing.

The doctor or nurse practitioner will talk with you about any upcoming evaluation and make a plan for your child. This may include further testing (labs, x-rays) or procedures. A nurse will provide you with the information necessary for you to complete the care plan for your child. After you visit is complete, you will be directed to Check-Out to make your return visit, if necessary.
