Labial Hypoplasia

Conditions

Labial hypoplasia is a condition in which one or both sides of a girl’s labia – the two large folds of fatty tissue covering the vagina – are smaller than normal, or even missing.

Patients can be seen by Texas Children's experts in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.

Causes & Risk Factors

The condition occurs when the labia don't develop normally during puberty. The cause is not yet known.

Symptoms & Types

Symptoms include:

  • Missing labia on one or both sides
  • Smaller than normal labia on one or both sides

Diagnosis & Tests

The condition may become obvious during childhood or puberty. Diagnosis is confirmed through a physical exam.

Treatment & Care

No treatment is necessary.

In some cases, symptomatic girls may choose to have a procedure done to reduce the larger side of the labia to match the smaller side.
