Advanced Intervention Strategies in Pediatrics: Optimizing Alignment for Function

This course is designed to provide physical, occupational and speech therapists specializing in pediatrics advanced taping techniques and clinical problem-solving skills. Attendees will review theory and basic taping, wrapping and strapping techniques, learn advanced and combination taping techniques, and develop clinical reasoning skills. The course will also provide information on the use of compression orthotics, in conjunction with taping techniques for specific pediatric diagnoses and impairments.

PRE-REQUISITE:  Participants must have taken, and passed the test for, the Kinesio Taping Assessments, Fundamental Concepts, and Techniques (Day 1 and 2),  and Kinesio Taping Advanced Techniques and Clinical Reasoning  (Day 3) Course.


Course Objectives

Participants will:

  • Review knowledge of basic taping, wrapping and strapping principles, as well as learn the properties of specific materials used to optimize alignment
  • Identify three specific muscle synergies and demonstrate combination taping techniques to facilitate muscle balance and alignment
  • Demonstrate four advanced taping techniques
  • Practice commonly used taping, wrapping, strapping techniques for specific diagnoses and impairments
  • Describe adjunctive treatment options for specific pediatric diagnoses
  • Participate in case studies, focusing on problem -solving to develop clinical observation skills

Instructor

Patricia Martin, PT, Certified Kinesio Tape Instructor, is currently manager of satellite therapy services at The Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation. She specializes in lower extremity biomechanics, splint fabrication, and taping in the treatment of children with orthopedic and neurological involvement. She has over thirty years’ experience in private practice, hospital, and clinic settings. She has experience in treatment of adults and children with neurological and musculoskeletal issues as well as athletes. She co-authored the book Kinesio Taping in Pediatrics and has written articles on the use of Kinesio Tape in the pediatric population. She is pediatric NDT-trained. She has taught pediatric taping and gait courses internationally.

Audrey Yasukawa, OT, Certified Kinesio Tape Instructor, is currently Chief of Occupational Therapy at La Rabid Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Audrey served as a pediatric resource clinician at The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. While at RIC, she assisted in the Upper Extremity Botox Clinic, piloted several pediatric research projects, and published numerous articles as well as several research studies on casting and taping. She co-authored the book Kinesio Taping in Pediatrics. She is pediatric and adult NDT-trained. Audrey has over 25 years’ experience working with adult and pediatric patients with a variety of neurological and musculoskeletal diagnoses. She has taught upper extremity casting and taping courses internationally.
