Dr. Katherine Leaming-Van Zandt is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at BCM and, an attending physician in the emergency centers of Texas Children's Hospital. She also serves as the Medical Director of the TCH West Campus Emergency Center.
Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt’s academic interests include patient-centered care, patient satisfaction/experience, and relationship-centered communication. As the Director of Patient-Centered Care and Guest Services for the section of pediatric emergency medicine (PEM), she leads a variety of multi-disciplinary committees and quality improvement projects designed to champion and promote patient-centered care and improve the emergency center (EC) experience for patients and their families. She also educates physicians, advanced practice practitioners, nurses, and EC staff on the importance of customer service-related principles and interpersonal communication skills. Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt co-authored a chapter in Communicating with Pediatric Patients and their Families: The Texas Children’s Hospital guide for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals (MedEdPortal, 2014). She, also, serves as an author on multiple projects validating and using a physician assessment tool that provides patients and their families the opportunity to evaluate the interpersonal communication skills of medical trainees and faculty.
Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt has, also, contributed to and been interviewed by numerous local, regional, and national media outlets on a variety of medically-relevant topics. She is one of the top physician contributors for the Texas Children’s Hospital Blog, and actively participates in a variety of community-driven and social media events.
