About

Dr. Josaura Fernandez is an advanced track fellowship trainee in pediatric bone marrow/stem cell transplantation. She completed her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training in 2023. She is board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. Prior to fellowship, she completed her medical school training at Central University of Venezuela and went on to complete her pediatrics residency training at Holtz Children's Hospital, part of Jackson Health System - University of Miami.

Dr. Fernandez first became interested in the field of pediatric hematology-oncology while working with the underserved throughout medical school in her home country, Venezuela. Motivated to continue serving this population, she pursued her residency in Miami, Florida, where she cared for many patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions that came seeking medical care not only from South Florida, but also from Latin America and the Caribbean. The resilience of children, adolescents and their families who traverse such arduous times inspires Dr. Fernandez on a daily basis and that ultimately strengthened her resolution to become a pediatric hematologist-oncologist after completing her residency.

During residency, she was actively involved in several quality improvement projects that resulted in department-wide implementation and improvement. As a result of one of her projects, the wait time in the emergency department for antibiotic administration in oncologic patients with fever was significantly reduced. She hopes to continue working on making improvements for all children with hematologic and oncologic conditions; not only in terms of improving outcomes, but also by positively impacting their quality of life.
