About John Dormans

Dr. John Dormans is perhaps best known for his pioneering work in the area of limb-sparing surgery for bone cancer, but he is also widely recognized for his work in treating pediatric spinal deformities, specifically scoliosis, and promoting safety in such surgeries.

Dr. Dormans served as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) from 1996 to 2014. He has served as President of the Medical Staff of CHOP and as the President of Children's Surgical Associates (CHOP surgical group) for four 3-year terms. He was the recipient of both the Jesse T. Nicholson Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and the Dean's Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. He was an AAOS and AOA Kashewagi Suzuki traveling fellow to Japan in 1996.

He served as President of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) for the 2015 50th anniversary meeting in Minneapolis. Dr. Dormans has won the SRS Hibbs Award for Best Basic Science Paper in 2011 and Best Clinical Paper in 2006. Dr. Dormans is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors Orthopaedics Overseas and served on the Board of Directors of the Decade of the Bone and Joint Project. He was the President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America for 2009-2010 and currently serves as the Treasurer of SICOT International and Secretary General of the SICOT Foundation. Additionally, he was named President of SICOT World Orthopaedic Concern.

He has published over 340 articles, authored more than 140 chapters and written/edited 5 books. He has participated as an invited lecturer in nearly 50 countries. In his career, Dr. Dormans has trained 51 clinical fellows and 37 research fellows.
