During my training in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology it became apparent that the areas of childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders and childhood motility disorders were both clinically and scientifically underserved. I was struck by how common these disorders (such as chronic abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and constipation) were and the large number of children affected in ways that were negatively impacting their lives. Together with a dedicated group of colleagues within the Texas Children’s Hospital Neurogastroenterology and Motility Program, I have committed my clinical efforts toward applying the most effective, cutting edge, and multi-disciplinary techniques to help children with gastrointestinal functional and motility disorders.
From a research perspective we have found that children with functional gastrointestinal disorders often find food worsens their symptoms. Our group’s clinical research in this area is focused on understanding the causes of gastrointestinal symptoms (such as abdominal pain, nausea, or bloating) in children with functional gastrointestinal disorders which occur after eating. By understanding and addressing these causes we hope to provide effective personalized therapies (such as dietary interventions) to improve health.
