Thyroid Cancer Program

The Thyroid Cancer Program at Texas Children’s Cancer Center offers multidisciplinary care to patients with thyroid cancer.

Our team of experts include pediatric oncologists, surgeons, endocrinologists, pathologists, radiologists, pediatric nurses, social workers and child life specialists. This team approach enables patients and families to receive the most comprehensive and innovative care in a single location over the full course of their treatment and for long term follow-up care.

Evaluation and Treatment

At Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers children are initially evaluated using ultrasound examination and laboratory tests. When indicated, we perform a fine needle aspiration of the suspicious thyroid nodule and confirm the diagnosis of thyroid cancer using the latest molecular diagnostic testing. Thyroid cancer in children is generally treated with surgery and radioactive iodine. For children refractory to these modalities, we are able to offer medical therapy using targeted agents.

Research

At Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, we are interested in understanding the biology of thyroid cancer with the goal of offering more successful therapies for pediatric patients  We have established the North American Pediatric Thyroid Cancer registry to collect information on children with thyroid cancers. We are the first and only center in North America to open a clinical trial of lenvatinib in children. Lenvatinib is approved for use in adults with differentiated thyroid cancer. We are currently testing the safety of this medication in children, and plan to test the effectiveness of this medication in children with thyroid cancers.
