Library Coordinators manage the Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library which offers books, board games, puzzles and movies for all ages.
The Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library opened in 1984 in a small linen closet with only 500 books on the shelves. Today it is located on the 16h floor of the West Tower in a much larger, welcoming area and is open seven days a week. The motto of the library is "A little something for everyone" and it boasts a collection of more than 6,000 fiction and non-fiction books for all ages. The collection includes a large selection of paperbacks for adults, storybooks for children, foreign language books, DVDs, board games and puzzles. The library also regularly hosts story times and programs with the Houston Downtown Aquarium.
In the family resource room, patients and parents can find medical and parenting resources, as well as computers with internet access, printers, a FAX machine and a copy machine.
Pi Beta Phi Book Nooks were introduced in 1999 to provide books for patients and families in waiting rooms. Currently, there are over 140 Pi Beta Phi Book Nooks—located at Texas Children's Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital West Campus, Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands Campus, Texas Children's Health Centers, Urgent care facilities, Centers for Women and Children, and in all of the Texas Children's Pediatric practices throughout the Houston area.
Pi Beta Phi Library staffing includes two full-time library coordinators and over 50 volunteers. The libraries average over 60 visitors a day. The Houston Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club has provided principal funding for the library since 1984. Other donations may be given "in honor of "or "in memory of "special friends and family members.
Pi Beta Phi Book Nooks are provided for the reading enjoyment of patients and families who come for clinic visits. There are over 60 Book Nooks in the Mark Wallace Tower and Pavilion for Women at Texas Children's Hospital. An additional 65 Book Nooks are located in the waiting rooms at Texas Children's Pediatrics practices and Texas Children's Health Centers.
Bingo Game Night
Every Tuesday night the library at Texas Children's Hospital invites patients and families to join for fun and games from 6:30 to 7:30pm
Every weekend, our volunteers visit patient rooms to distribute books and DVDs to patients who have been hospitalized on the 9th-15th floors of West Tower. For infection control purposes, patients who are on isolation precautions are unable to check out books. However, the library is pleased to provide new, donated books for patients on isolation precautions.
Complimentary Computer Services
The library offers complimentary access to computers, printers, copiers and fax machines for all patient families.
