About the Hematology-Oncology Inpatient Unit
Patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to the 58-bed hematology/oncology inpatient unit, located on the 7th and 9th floors of Texas Children's West Tower. The 20-story building’s inpatient rooms are family-friendly and feature the latest pediatric technological advances.
Completed in 2003, the West Tower captured top honors in the 2003 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) / Houston Chronicle Interior Design Awards. FKP Architects Inc. of Houston earned the first place award in commercial design, health care category, from ASID for its design of Texas Children’s West Tower history-making expansion, which added 15 floors to the existing five-story building.
The hematology-oncology inpatient unit is located on the seventh and ninth floors of the Texas Children's West Tower building (a.k.a., 7WT and 9WT) at Texas Children's Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
Amenities provided in Texas Children's West Tower include:
- a family services floor, featuring pre-teen and teen activity rooms;
- a business center;
- the Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library and classrooms and a deli;
- family rooms, located on each patient-care floor designed as a respite for parents and families; and
- large patient rooms, approximately 330 square feet in size to provide for more family involvement.
Most patient rooms in the West Tower are private. Other room amenities include a desk, a safe for valuables, a blu-ray player and visitor daybeds.
Patients requiring ambulatory follow-up are subsequently seen in the Lester and Sue Smith Outpatient Clinic. Patients with pain crises can also be treated in the Urgent Care Bay (UCB), a section of our outpatient clinic staffed with a physician and a nurse dedicated to the triage of patients and their treatment.
We understand that having a child in the hospital can seem overwhelming. Our staff and medical professionals are dedicated to providing the very best care for your child and supporting your family every step of the way.
