BMT Social Events
Texas Children’s is dedicated to helping patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation live their lives to the fullest after treatment. We offer 3 annual social events for BMT/SCT patients and families, which can be a fun way to relieve the stress of treatment and hospital stays.
Emotional and social challenges
The period after a bone marrow transplant can be a challenging and stressful time. It will take time for your immune system to recover from a transplant, and preventing infection is an effort that affects the whole family. Home-schooling, avoiding large crowds and public areas and limiting the number of visitors to your home can take a toll on the entire family. During this period, which can last up to 1-2 years, you may begin to feel isolated from your friends and classmates. It may seem as though life is happening around you, but not with you. Hosting social gatherings for bone marrow transplant patients gives them an opportunity to develop new friends, to feel “normal” and to spend, if even for just one night, time to not worry about all that medical stuff. These events are generously funded by His Grace Foundation, Faulk Foundation, Riley’s Cause and Stuff the Sleigh.
