Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI)
The Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children’s Hospital (BIPAI) provides high-quality, high-impact and highly ethical pediatric and family HIV/AIDS care and treatment, health professional education and clinical research in resource-limited settings. With hundreds of thousands of children and families in care throughout the world. BIPAI’s lessons learned and programmatic know-how informs HIV/AIDS health services for children and adolescents in Houston, making prevention and treatment strategies more widely available.
Headquartered at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, BIPAI operates a network of affiliated non-governmental organizations that support clinical centers of excellence, clinics and programs in Argentina, Angola, Botswana, Colombia, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Morocco, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Swaziland, Tanzania and Uganda. The BIPAI Network provides specialized training and technical assistance to numerous foreign ministries of health and partner programs worldwide. As of 2017, more than 300,000 children and families receive care from BIPAI, making it the largest university-based HIV care program in the world.
The BIPAI Network provides the human and physical infrastructure on which Texas Children’s Global Health has expanded care and healthcare professional training to include Tuberculosis, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Pharmacy, Neurology, Neonatology and many more.
Community impact 2017
- By the end of FY17, BIPAI had more than 300,000 HIV-infected children and families in treatment, more than triple the number of HIV-infected children living in the US, Canada and Western Europe combined.
- More than 1,500 doctors, nurses, other medical professionals and community health workers participated in BIPAI education and treatment efforts each month.
