The Hyperinsulinism Program at Texas Children's Hospital is a multidisciplinary program designed to streamline the diagnosis and treatment of children with hyperinsulinism (HI).
This disease causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) secondary to unregulated excessive insulin secretion. HI affects 1 in every 50,000 live newborns, but the risk is as high as 1 in 2,500 in some populations. If untreated the disease can lead to permanent brain damage, seizures and developmental delay.
Because of the rarity of the disease the medical community has not standardized an approach to diagnose and treat children. Many centers lack the expertise and technology required to provide the best care and outcomes. To streamline the process, establish a diagnosis and treat children with HI as soon as possible, Texas Children's Hospital has established the Hyperinsulinism Program.
The program comprises of a multidisciplinary team including Pediatric Endocrinologists, Neonatologists, Geneticists, Pediatric Radiologists, Pediatric Pathologists and Pediatric Surgeons.
The goals of the program are to:
- Provide families of children with HI the best-in-class care. This care includes rapid diagnosis and initiation of a treatment plan implemented in an optimal and consistent way based on the current and reliable evidence.
- Track patient outcomes related to HI including developmental outcomes to refine and improve management of patients with this disease.
- Engage patients and families throughout the care management and follow-up process to learn about their ongoing experience with these conditions.
Receiving care at a dedicated pediatric hospital allows our patients to have access to a full range of pediatric specialists whenever needed.
A cornerstone of the program's approach is to use evidence-based clinical guidelines to facilitate the management of the disease. The team presents cases in regular multidisciplinary meetings to determine the best course of action for each patient, and then tracks the patient's outcomes over time.
