Shulman receives Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Award

The American Neurological Association (ANA), a leading and among the oldest associations for academic neurology, selected Dr. Joshua Shulman for this year’s Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Award in the Physician-Scientist - Basic Sciences category.

Shulman is an associate professor in the departments of Neurology and Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine and investigator at the Jan and Dan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital. As a physician-scientist, he cares for patients with Parkinson's disease and related conditions in the Baylor Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic.

The Derek Denny-Brown award is ANA’s highest and most prestigious honor that recognizes early- to mid-career neurologists and neuroscientists. This award honors those in the first 10 years of their career at the assistant/associate faculty (equivalent) level who have made outstanding basic and clinical scientific advances toward the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of neurological diseases.

Shulman is being recognized for his stellar contributions to neurological research, specifically in advancing the basic mechanisms responsible for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. His research mission is to understand genetic mechanisms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and to translate these insights to enhance risk prediction, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. To achieve these goals, his team integrates human genomic analyses with functional investigation in experimental animal models of neurodegenerative disease. This innovative strategy has revealed genetic pathways of cognition and motor control, and their impact in the aging brain.

“Dr. Shulman’s work shows a positive trajectory and we anticipate he will continue to make major contributions to the field of neurology, ” the review committee said.

As an award recipient, Shulman will receive $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque and the opportunity to present his work during the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Symposium at the ANA’s Virtual Annual Meeting on Oct. 4, 2020.
