Paracentesis/Pleurex Drain

Conditions

Paracentesis is when fluid from the abdomen is aspirated for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes.

This is typically performed under ultrasound guidance. If necessary a drain can be placed at the same time.

For chronic ascites (such as malignant ascites) a special drain called a PleurX catheter can be placed that allows management of the excess fluid at home.
