Specialized transport for
children and newborns

Many of the babies cared for at Texas Children's Newborn Center are born at adjoining hospitals. Others are transferred to Texas Children's from local, state, national and even international facilities.

Some of these children arrive via the Kangaroo Crew - a specialized transport service that efficiently and safely brings critically ill babies who need specialty pediatric care from outlying hospitals directly to Texas Children's.

The Kangaroo Crew fleet comprises ambulances that transport children within an 85-mile radius of Houston, Texas, and fixed wing aircraft based at Houston Hobby Airport that transport children beyond the 85-mile radius.

The transport team includes the specialized expertise of a neonatal nurse practitioner, a neonatal nurse and neonatal respiratory therapist on each transport. The team transports more than 700 babies to Texas Children's NICU each year.
