PEDIATRIC HEART SURGERY

Beating the odds

A leader in pediatric heart surgery

Pediatric heart surgery has been performed at Texas Children’s Hospital since it opened in 1954. Today, Texas Children’s Heart Center is recognized across the globe as a leader in this highly specialized field. Heart center surgeons perform more than 700 surgeries annually.

“Essentially, the philosophy of differences in pediatric medicine applies to children’s heart surgery,” said Dr. Charles D. Fraser Jr., chief of Congenital Heart Surgery at Texas Children’s Heart Center. “We have pediatricians because of the special medical needs of children. The same considerations are true when treating a child’s malformed heart, which has its own anatomy, physiology and timing. Surgical procedures and instrumentation are different from those for adults.”

A highly skilled, multidisciplinary team, whose members are extensively trained and experienced is dedicated exclusively to pediatric congenital heart surgery and treatment. The heart center offers every cardiac therapy available in pediatric medicine, and the care for each child is individualized.

Heart center surgeons also may offer a less invasive surgery option to repair certain defects. Learn more about minimally invasive surgery.

“Not only are the people here dedicated professionals, they are drawn here because of a love for the children,” said Dr. E. Dean McKenzie, a Texas Children’s congenital heart surgeon. “Every day, I witness nurses, physicians, child-life specialists, social workers and others giving time and effort above and beyond the call of duty because of the compassion they feel for these children and their families. It’s a very special place.”
