Texas Children's Pediatric Pharmacology Unit

The Texas Children’s Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit (PPRU) is part of an ambitious nationwide campaign to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of children.

By applying evidence gained through the PPRU’s pharmacological research and clinical trials, Texas Children’s researchers are finding the keys to better care for kids. While many medications continue to be used to treat the pediatric patient, knowledge regarding the use of these agents remains limited.

Approximately 75 percent of all medications marketed today do not carry FDA-approved labeling for use in children.

In response to the lack of information on drug therapy in children, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) established the Network of Pediatric Pharmacology Research Units. The network’s goal is to increase the number and variety of drugs that are FDA-approved for use in children.

The research done at Texas Children’s PPRU is key to determining the best drug dosages for children of all ages, and defines the concise pediatric-specific labeling necessary for pharmaceutical companies, physicians and caregivers alike.

Only five of the 80 drugs most frequently used to treat newborns and infants are labeled for pediatric use.

If your company or organization needs assistance in complying with the FDA’s required testing of new drugs and biological agents in pediatric patients, Texas Children’s PPRU can help.

Texas Children’s Hospital is an ideal testing site for companies seeking to research and clinically test drugs with a pediatric application. Texas Children’s provides high-quality clinical research, a large pediatric patient population, expertise in pediatric drug studies and the facilities and resources necessary to achieving your company or organization’s research goals.
