CENTER FOR
INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS
The Texas Children's Health Center for
International Adoptions was the first center in the Southwest to
offer specialized, multidisciplinary medical treatment for children
adopted from developing countries. The center offers comprehensive
assessment and care for these adopted children, as well as services
for new parents.
- Review of videotapes and/or medical
records of adoptees
- Assistance in preparing the home and
family for its new member, including referrals for
pretravel
counseling to assess potential health risks for those picking
up the child
- Information, assistance and
expertise in working with foreign orphanages
- Online discussions about
international adoption*

- Basic medicine kit
- 24-hour assistance with immediate
and/or unexpected concerns
- A complete physical and
developmental examination within two weeks of the child's arrival
in the United States
- Complete laboratory examinations to
screen for illnesses often seen in international adoptees
- Dietary assessment and counseling
for the family on the child's special needs
- Social work assessment to ease the
stress of becoming new parents
- Ongoing care for the child and
support for the family, including the child's primary-care needs

at Texas Children's Hospital, as needed

physician at Texas Children's Pediatric Associates after the initial
assessment
