NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Petrellos Give $5,000,000 to Launch New Institute

  Petrello Family

Thanks to a $5 million private donation from Anthony Petrello, a member of the Texas Children's Hospital Board of Trustees, and his wife, Cynthia, Texas Children's has launched a groundbreaking effort that combines clinical, educational and research programs focused on children with mental or neurological disorders.

The Petrello's generous gift commitment, one of the largest philanthropic commitments in the hospital's history, will help establish the new Texas Children's Neurological Research Institute, a research-based center of excellence in pediatric neurosciences.

Research into the causes and treatments of neurological disorders has long been a focus of Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. Texas Children's is home to more than 23 pediatric neurologists and the Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology, a clinic that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of neurological disorders in children.

Texas Children's also established Bridges, which provides preschool programs for children with autistic spectrum disorders, and founded the Rise School in collaboration with citizens in this community for children with Down syndrome and related disorders. As well, the hospital has been home to the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics for more than 40 years.

Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's have been at the forefront of identifying genes that cause neurological disorders and have described the functional characteristics of those genes, including Fragile X syndrome; Rett syndrome; Angelman syndrome; Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease; Prader-Willi syndrome; spinocerebellar ataxia; and lissencephaly.

Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's will be similar to the hospital's other large centers, such as the Cancer Center and the Heart Center, which are consistently ranked among the best in the nation. The Petrellos are helping lead a fundraising effort to support the program.
