HOUSTON (July 8, 2003) - The Houston/Galveston area just got safer for kids.
Two new life-jacket loaner programs were added to the Houston/Galveston area in May. These programs, operated by the Safe Kids Greater Houston Water Safety Coalition and led by Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention, seek to prevent children from drowning.
“Drowning is the second greatest cause of unintentional injury – the No. 1 killer of children,” said Susan Hirtz, manager of Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention. “All it takes is an instant for a child to drown.”
The life-jacket loaner programs are at the following locations: Galveston County public boat ramp in Kemah (under the Highway 146 bridge, near the Kemah Boardwalk) Public boat ramp off of 61st Street in Galveston Lake Houston’s Alexander Dussen Park Lake Sommerville
Boating parents may borrow life jackets for their children at any of these sites, but must return them at the end of the day. Children younger than 13 years are required to wear life jackets while boating.
