Simple Summer Pleasures

Now that school is out, summer is a great time for family fun. But that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank at an amusement part or on an extended vacation. There are lots of ways to enjoy the summer with your family for just a few dollars, or even for free! Here are a few ideas:

Throw a Water Balloon Fight
A swimming pool isn’t the only way to cool down and enjoy the sun at the same time. A few balloons filled with water can get your whole family running and laughing together. You can start with a balloon toss, where teams of 2 compete to see who can throw their balloon the farthest without it breaking. After that, your kids will be ready for a full-on water balloon fight. It can be every-man-for-himself, or you can divide into teams. Parents vs. kids is always a fun way to choose sides. Make sure to clean up the burst balloons after the fight, since the debris can be a choking hazard for pets and small children.

Get Some Sidewalk Chalk
This is especially good for younger children. The whole family can work on one big picture together, or everyone can do his or her own thing. You can also draw hopscotch boards or use the chalk as a way to teach any non-readers or writers a few simple words.

Visit the Library
No matter how much you love summer, some days the heat will be just too much for you and your kids to take. Those are the perfect days to visit your local library. With thousands of books covering practically any topic you can imagine, your children will be sure to find something they love, keeping their minds active when they’re out of school. Many libraries also offer activities like story time and puppet shows to keep younger kids engaged and happy. Make sure to let your kids get their own library cards.

Set Up a Lemonade Stand
For a few dollars your kids can start their own small business. Have them make signs and mix the lemonade. Then they can set up a small table supplied with the lemonade, cups and ice. Try to choose a spot where at least a few neighbors will stop by and encourage the children to make correct change. It’s a sneaky way to help them learn about math and money. Be sure to stay with your kids the whole time.

Have a Picnic
You and your children are going to need to eat lunch anyway, so why not have it outside? Pack a few sandwiches, some fresh fruit and plenty to drink. Then grab a blanket and head to the park or even your own backyard. The change of scenery can turn a simple meal into a fun time for all. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Make Popsicles
Everyone loves a cold treat on a hot summer day. Instead of picking one up at the store or from an ice cream truck, why not make your own? All you need is an ice cube tray, some plastic wrap, toothpicks and a refreshing drink such as lemonade. Pour the drink into the tray and cover it with plastic wrap. Next, poke holes in the plastic wrap with the toothpicks and stand them up straight. A couple of hours in the freezer and you and your kids will enjoy your own homemade treats!
