Cardiologists evaluate and treat children from
birth
through young adulthood for conditions such as heart palpitations,
murmurs and chest pains. Pediatricians often refer patients to the
Health Centers when abnormalities are discovered, or need further
assessment. Diagnostic and interpretation services are available for
electrocardiograms, Holter monitors and 2D echocardiograms.

Diabetes and endocrine specialists evaluate and treat children and
adolescents with diabetes, growth delay, thyroid disorders and other
glandular conditions.

Radiology services help diagnose problems so treatment can begin
promptly. Using the latest technology, the Picture Archiving
Communications System (PACS) transmits images to Texas Children’s
Hospital for interpretation by a board-certified pediatric
radiologist. All x-rays and ultrasounds are performed in the health
center, and within minutes, Health Center physicians can begin
treatment of fractures or determine appropriate treatments for
serious conditions.

Gastroenterology (GI) and nutrition specialists, dietitians and
behavioral therapists evaluate and treat children with eating
disorders or digestion problems, including diarrhea, constipation/encopresis,
GI reflux, food allergies, abdominal pain, obesity, anorexia,
bulimia, ulcers and Crohn’s disease. Patients requiring feeding
tubes and special formulas also can be monitored.

Neurological specialists facilitate in the diagnosis, treatment and
follow-up care of neurological disorders in children. These include
epilepsy, motor problems, seizures, static encephalopathies,
cerebral palsy, developmental delay, headaches, brain tumors,
congenital malformations, weakness, movement disorders and
degenerative diseases.

Testing, diagnostic procedures and consultation services are
available to help guide the treatment of central nervous system

As part of the neurophysiology service, testing, diagnostic
procedures and consultations are available to help diagnose the
full range of pediatric sleep disorders in children. Testing
includes polysomnography and multiple sleep latency tests.

Ophthalmologists provide diagnosis and treatment of eye problems.
Special expertise is available in the areas of amblyopia, congenital
cataracts, strabismus (crossed eyes, wall eyes or double vision),
eye movement disorders, ptosis (drooping of eyelids), tear duct
problems and retinoblastoma.

Children and adolescents with acute or chronic problems relating to
the musculoskeletal system are evaluated for conditions such as
fractures, congenital problems, hip dysplasia, sports injuries and
gait abnormalities. Spinal problems such as scoliosis and
neuromuscular problems like cerebral palsy are treated. Casting and
imaging can be performed on site. Surgical procedures are scheduled
at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care is provided for patients
with ear, nose, throat, and head and neck diseases and disorders,
including hearing loss, nasal and sinus disease, congenital and
acquired head and neck malformations or tumors, swallowing and voice
abnormalities and airway problems. Surgical procedures are performed
at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Pediatric surgeons evaluate the need for surgery and perform minor
surgical procedures, including circumcising infants, removing skin
tags and suturing minor lacerations. Complex procedures are

Children and adolescents suffering from acute or chronic
neuromuscular problems such as cerebral palsy, brain and spinal cord
injury, and nerve and muscular problems can be treated. Available
services include bracing, anti-spasticity management and Botox
injections.

This service treats children with rheumatic diseases, including
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, dermatomyositis, scleroderma,
Kawasake’s disease and rheumatic fever. A multidisciplinary team,
which includes pediatric rheumatologists, follows chronic patients
until adulthood.

Scoliosis services treat children of any age with back problems
including scoliosis and kyphosis. Children with spine problems are
carefully evaluated and options such as exercising and bracing are
available.

Children, adolescents and young adults with acute and chronic
injuries are treated. Treatment focuses on rehabilitation of
musculoskeletal deficits and treating the underlying cause of the
problem with therapy and nonsurgical techniques.

Texas Children’s Health Centers offer a full complement of
therapeutic services, including occupational, physical and speech
therapy. Our therapists specialize in assessing and treating
children with disabilities. They understand how children develop,
function and communicate.
- Occupational therapy
Treatments consist of play situations that teach children life
skills. These sessions
include a range of activities from feeding and dressing to
operating simple equipment. Occupational therapists help children
develop age-appropriate hand-eye coordination skills necessary for
normal childhood experiences.

- Physical therapy
Physical therapists specialize in movement. They look at a child’s
strength, flexibility and balance and evaluate the specific
abilities of that child to coordinate muscles used to roll, sit,
crawl, walk, run, ride a bike or even climb a tree.

- Speech therapy
Speech-language pathologists provide diagnostic evaluations
and treatment programs for communication problems. Evaluations may
include articulation, voice, fluency, receptive and expressive

Urology provides medical care for children with genitourinary
problems, including congenital defects of the urinary system,
abnormalities of genitalia, hernias, hydroceles, undescended
testicles, urinary tract infections, dysfunctional voiding patterns
and incontinence. Surgical procedures are performed at Texas
Children’s Hospital, while pre- and post-surgical care is available
at the Health Centers.

The wheelchair clinic is designed to measure, fit, modify and adapt
seating and mobility systems, including walkers, gait trainers and
bath equipment for any and all children. Evaluations are performed
by a physical or occupational therapist. Referrals are accepted from
pediatricians and other therapists, as well as school districts and
community social workers. A physician’s order/prescription is
required to obtain a wheelchair.
